Principal Low Latency Java Engineer

London, UK or Remote

We are a venture-backed fintech founded in 2021.  We work with global banks and money services businesses, providing market data and analytics and an FX trading and payment initiation platform. We are looking for a Principal Low Latency Java Engineer to:


  • Lead the design and development of high-performance, low-latency trading applications within the ABX platform.

  • Drive innovation and optimisation across the entire trade lifecycle, ensuring both scalability and reliability.

  • Architect and implement fault-tolerant systems in a Linux environment, prioritising performance and uptime.

  • Collaborate with team members to integrate partner APIs and enhance the platform’s event-driven architecture.

  • Conduct in-depth performance profiling, tuning, and optimisation to achieve maximum throughput and minimal latency.

  • Mentor and guide engineering teams in building scalable, low-latency solutions while promoting best practices.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends and incorporate new technologies to continuously improve the platform’s capabilities.


Required Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:


  • 5+ years of experience in Core Java with a strong emphasis on performance optimisation.

  • Demonstrated experience building low-latency trading systems or similar high-performance applications.

  • Deep understanding of multithreaded programming, concurrency, and minimising garbage collection (GC) overhead.

  • Proven track record of designing highly resilient systems with a focus on fault tolerance and uptime.

  • Experience with low-latency messaging tools (e.g., Chronicle, Aeron) and high-throughput data exchange.

  • Expertise in optimising performance on bare-metal Linux servers for low-latency applications.

  • Familiarity with FIX, WebSockets, or similar protocols used for streaming data in financial or high-performance environments.

  • Proficiency in Docker and experience in full development lifecycle with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices.

  • Strong ability to analyse and resolve complex performance issues in real-time systems.


Preferred Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:


  • Experience working with financial industry standards such as FIX, SBE, eTrading platforms, and risk management.

  • Exposure to STP (Straight-Through Processing), OMS (Order Management Systems), EMS (Execution Management Systems), or similar financial systems.

  • Basic understanding of front-end technologies like React, with the ability to collaborate with full-stack teams.

  • Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs to support scalable financial systems.

  • Knowledge of testing strategies, particularly end-to-end testing in complex, high-performance systems.

  • Familiarity with cloud environments or with cloud-native technologies for scalability and infrastructure management.

  • Experience in Agile development, including sprint planning, backlog management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
